Speech Recognition Systems

A speech recognition system can also be called a natural language processing system, or a voice recognition system and involves recognising spoken words. This is an area of research that until recent times had not been greatly successful. The Telstra sutomated directory assistance is one such example. This system is becoming more reliable but is still only successful in a limited range of often used enquiries.

Another application of this technology is in regards to security and using a voice recognition system as a biometric control in allowing users access to areas of a building or a computer system after having their voice traits analysed and verified. The user will speak into a telephone or microphone and then have their voice verified by comparing the voiceprint to the others stored on the database.

Another application of speech recognition systems is the voice to text (VTT) software that is now available. This software will convert the spoken word to text for editing and can also read the text back. Even applications such as Microsoft Office have this capability, however it does require training the computer to recognise the natural patterns of a users speech.. This is a great tool for people who are sight impaired.
